truly excellent, inventive fare

Many of us still lament the loss of the original Sacred Chow, the deli-style vegan eatery on Hudson Street in the west Village. But its reincarnation in the heart of NYU-dom greatly improves upon the original. A deep-red-painted brick wall, fanciful grape-bunch lights dangling throughout and a small Turkish fountain give the place a calm Eastern vibe. Table service, new tapas offerings, beers on tap and a host of organic wines all enhance what is truly excellent, inventive fare. Best of all, you’ll have no trouble recognizing the old Sacred Chow’s signature soups and stews by name or taste: the Vietnamese sweet-potato’s silken lightness and intense but soft flavors are still there, as is the dense richness of the black-bean chili soup. All the old favorites rotate as daily specials.
